Yesterday was a sad one in our family. It marked the passing of one of our own.  Someone who lived by first principles. His influence was quiet.  I try to live by first principles myself, it felt appropriate to let that reality shape this post.

As we faced the loss a conversation with my son evolved.  He told me that while I had taught him about core values, he had never heard me speak explicitly about first principles and had assumed they were the same thing.  I realized I had never tried to articulate the difference. I put it simply: core values are what we build to help us navigate reality; first principles are not built. They exist independent of us. We can align our values with them or not, but they remain either way.

Moments of loss have a way of forcing reflection. Trauma changes perspective, and perspective shapes the path forward. That’s true in life, and it’s true in systems. One person living in alignment can influence a family, a community, even a larger structure, not through control, but through consistency.

​

This is where the connection to cryptocurrency belongs. At its core, the digital economic ecosystem is not about ideology or guarantees. It is a system governed by constraints: ownership, responsibility, risk, and consequence. First principles don’t reward intention; they respond to behavior. In markets, as in life, ignoring those constraints doesn’t produce injustice, it produces outcomes. Those outcomes can be examined and learned from, or responsibility can be deferred elsewhere. Either way, the system continues to operate.

There are no guarantees in life, and there are no guarantees in free markets. There is only risk and reward, alignment and misalignment. Self-custody, self-reliance, and self-sovereignty are not moral positions.  They are acknowledgments of how the system actually works. When those realities are respected, people move forward deliberately. When they are ignored, the negative results are just as predictable and rarely chosen.

Loss reminds us of what endures. Principles don’t disappear when people do. They remain, shaping outcomes long after the moment that revealed them. What matters is whether we choose to align with them once they are clearly seen.
